City League Wrestling: Facts and Dates to Remember
Over the next couple of weeks in the City League, we’ll take certain days to examine a particular winter sport and tell you how its season is handled in PIAA District VIII. Today’s sport: wrestling.
City League Teams: Perry, Carrick, Obama, Brashear, Westinghouse, Allderdice
First legal practice date: Nov. 16, 2012
First City League competition: Dec. 12, 2012
City League Championship: Jan. 31, 2013
PIAA First Round: Feb. 4, 2013
Last year, Allderdice’s team won the City League Championship. However, Brashear’s Godwin Nyama competed in 120-lb class through the state individual tournament and became the first City League wrestler to win a state championship.
The City League Champion team gets an automatic berth in the PIAA Class AAA tournament. District VIII does not get an entry in the Class AA tournament, regional or otherwise.
The Class AAA team tournament begins with regionals; District VIII’s is the Northwest. At the Northwest Regional tournament, the City League Champions will compete with teams from Districts IV, VI, IX, and X.
