Refresher: Which City League teams will be WPIAL teams for 2012-13?
We're at another turning point for City league sports. You may recall the March reports stating that certain sports would no longer be City League sports in the coming school year; the teams will be joining the WPIAL. This post is written to give you a brief refresher on what those reports mean.
First off, we'll give you a list of the sports that will be moving. (Keep in mind that its only for four schools - Allderdice, Brashear, Carrick, and Obama Academy.)
Sports:
Allderdice baseball, soccer (boys' and girls'), swimming (boys' and girls'), tennis (boys' and girls'), and cross country (boys' and girls'), golf, and softball
Brashear and Carrick baseball, soccer (boys' and girls'), and softball
Obama Academy soccer (boys' and girls') and swimming (boys' and girls')
Second, note that the remaining sports will still have a City League championship. They are:
Football, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls track, and wrestling.
Third, note that some sports teams will remain in the City League as their counterparts move to the WPIAL. For example, Obama softball or Westnghouse cross country. In March of 2012, City League athletic director Mike Gavlik explained this to the Post-Gazette. Basically, Gavlik felt that enough "competitive balance" remained for the teams staying in the City League. Gavlik added that the City League would still have "independent" teams that did not participate with the WPIAL, and that these independent teams would be responsible for their own schedules.
Lastly, note that the sections of those teams who are moving will vary. For example, the Allderdice baseball team will be in a section with Pine Richland, Shaler, Penn Hills, Woodland Hills, and Moon.
Further updates on City teams transition to the WPIAL will be posted as the 2012-13 school year approaches. This post is just a refresher at the end of the 2011-12 year.
