City League track meets are developmental, assist in the evolution of athletes

You may read every week that there are League-wide meets at Oliver, but you may wonder about the results. They’re not in the newspaper. This is because the meets are not scored. They are developmental.

“None of the city schools have a track except Oliver,” explained Allderdice head coach Ed Flynn. Flynn added that the City League track meets held 1-2 times per week are often the only chance the athletes can get to gain experience at an actual track and field facility. But, it works.

At the developmental meets, the teams can enter as many participants into each event as they would like. “Since it’s a developmental meet, we’re not limited to three kids per team,” said Flynn. For example, Flynn noted that there will be as many as 5-6 heats of a 100-meter dash

Flynn explained that the weekend invitationals draw participants from the City League, where they can compete out of district to gain experience for state level competition. Good examples can be seen through many of Schenley’s 2011 sprinters; they participated at the state level after coming through District VIII development. One caveat Flynn noted was that there are no facilities for pole vaulting or javelin; likewise the City does not use those events in their track meets.

Tomorrow, Allderdice and Obama Academy will join the schools of a few other districts at the TSTCA Outdoor Championship meet at West Mifflin. In the coming weeks, City League track and field athletes will attend invitationals at Thomas Jefferson and Baldwin. City League Track and Field Championships will take place May 10-12, and all City League track teams will participate.
