Ambridge hockey team starts title defense with shutout

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

Despite losing its top two scorers from last season, the defending Open Cup champion Ambridge hockey team started its season with a 6-0 win over Wheeling Central last Thursday.

Ambridge, who was named Quigley last season because of a co-op arrangement between the two schools that no longer exists because there were no hockey players from Quigley this season, lost 93 points of offense from last season with Doug Simon graduating and Nick Santiago deciding to play amateur hockey.

But defenseman Chris Ponter picked up the slack in the opener, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Forward Glenn Veahman added two goals.

Ambridge did return its starting goaltender from last season, Preston Charleton, who stopped all 13 shots in the win over Wheeling. Charleton was 16-3-1 last season.
