Ambridge girls volleyball team wants second straight section title

The Ambridge High School girls volleyball team is closing in on a second consecutive Section 2-AA title. The Bridgers completed the first half with a perfect 5-0 record.

"I expected this team to do well again this year," Ambridge coach Kim Bogati said. "We had four seniors last year and only one was a starter. We've got almost everybody back."

Bogati has built her squad around the players who were voted to the first team of the Section 2-AA All-Star Team: 5-11 senior outside hitter Kristin Collins, 5-7 junior setter Abbey Brewer, and 5-10 junior Lexi Hilzendeger.

"It's nice to have three All-Stars in our lineup," Bogati said.

Bogati is also pleased to have a pair of middle hitters back who battled injuries last year: 5-9 senior Rachel Deiter and 5-10 junior Destiny Tucker.

"Both missed time last year with injuries," Bogati said. "It's great to have both healthy this year."

Others in Ambridge's eight-player rotation are: 5-5 junior libero Hannah Krokonko, 5-5 senior right-side hitter Samantha Peters, and 5-7 junior right-side hitter Cassie Bucka.

"Last year, it came down to a battle between Ambridge, Knoch, and Mars for the section title," Bogati said. "It's the same this year. We were able to beat Knoch and Mars in the first half. Our goal is to beat them again and claim another section title."

Knoch begins the second half with a 4-1 record, while Mars is 3-2. Ambridge plays at Knoch Tuesday. The Bridgers play host to Mars on Oct. 18.
