Allderdice's Irwin to take shot at PIAA boys tennis title
Last season, Jesse Irwin's high school tennis season was ended by State College on the courts of the Hershey Racquet Club.
Now a senior at Allderdice, Irwin is hoping history does not repeat itself.
The City League singles tournament champion, Irwin will play Blake Gregory of State College High School noon today at the Hershey Racquet Club in a first-round match at the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament.
Irwin was part of the City League doubles championship team last season along with partner Nic Vidic. The duo lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Edward Badding and Bernardo Dellagnelo of State College in the first round of the PIAA tournament in Hershey.
"It was definitely an experience," Irwin said. "It prepared me for what I'll encounter now."
The first round and quarterfinals are today in Hershey with the semifinals, final and consolation match scheduled for Saturday.
