Allderdice track team headed to Thomas Jefferson, rain or shine
The Jaguar Invitational is happening, but today’s forecast is 48 degrees and rainy.
“Yeah, we’re very concerned about the weather – it’s a long day in the rain,” said head coach Ed Flynn. “The last invite at West Mifflin - we got there, we set up, and within 20 minutes it rained.” The Allderdice track team became cold and rained-on early. They stayed that way all day.
But, the bad forecast is not stopping the Dragons this weekend. “The kids want to run,” Flynn said.
He added that they are equipped with an easy-up tent and a highly competitive mindset. “Everyone has to run under the same conditions,” Flynn said. He noted that appropriate precaution would be taken with events like long jump, triple jump, high jump, and others where slippery conditions present significant safety issues. “It’s about the elements, and what they could do to a kid,” Flynn said.
Other City League athletes will be joining Allderdice at the Jaguar invite. The Obama team is one such group of athletes.
“Thomas Jefferson’s a really nice meet," said Flynn. He explained that the meet setup makes for a fun competition. There are typically fewer than 20 schools present, which means that the number of participants per event per team is not limited. Furthermore, heats are not decided until everyone shows up to their events. This insures that each heat is filled and competitive.
“This makes is a lot more fun,” Flynn said. “By having a smaller number of schools and allowing more kids to compete.”
Flynn summed it up in the best way possible. “It’s a very nice meet, except for the rain. “
“Forty-eight and rain is better than forty and rain…”
