Third Annual “Terrific 21” Girls’ Volleyball Program Interstate All-Star Match vs. Ohio District One All-Stars


Jonathan Whaley and the Ohio District One Coaches Association are conducting the Third Annual Interstate Girls Volleyball All-Star match featuring some of the top senior players from the WPIAL and Ohio District One.  The all-time series between these two organizations is even at one win apiece.

The inaugural event was held at Bishop Canevin High School on November 28, 2010.  The Ohio District One All-Stars rallied from a 2 sets to zero deficit to defeat the “Terrific 21” Girls’ Volleyball Program All-Stars, 3-2.  The scores were (21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 26-24 and 15-6).

Last year the event was held at Girard, Ohio High School on November 27, 2011 and the “Terrific 21” All-Stars defeated the Ohio District One All-Stars, 3-2. The scores were (25-23, 23-25, 25-10, 20-25 and 15-13).

This year’s event will begin with an All-Star Breakfast banquet for the participants at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 25th.  Three former “Terrific 21” Girls’ Volleyball Program All-Stars will serve as keynote speakers.  They are Moon Area High School graduates Ashley Buse (Duquesne University) and Casey Pattyn (West Virginia Wesleyan College) and from West Allegheny High School, Korin Wengryn (West Virginia Wesleyan College).  The topic of their remarks will be “From High School Volleyball Standout to College Freshmen”.

The All-Star Match will be held at Moon Area High School that afternoon on Sunday, November 25th and the “First Serve” is set for 4:00 p.m.
The always entertaining pre-match All-Star player introductions will start at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the door starting at 2:45 p.m. Cost for adults 18 years of age and up is $8.00.  Senior citizens and students 17 years of age an under pay $3.00.

This year’s “Terrific 21” Girls Volleyball Program All-Star team is comprised of players from all three enrollment classifications.  

There are (8) 2012 First Team All-Section players included on this year’s All-Star team and (3) Second Team All-Section performers that make up the 12 person “Terrific 21” All-Star team.

The eight First Team All-Section honorees include three outstanding players from Peters Township High School (Shiloh Simonson, Kelly Johnson and Lauren Belack) and a pair of standouts from Bishop Canevin (Katie Oliverio and Jody Mackin).  From Freeport Area High School Ashley Sample and from Upper St. Clair High School Kelly Reynolds and Moon Area High School’s Katie Peters.

The three Second Team All-Section players are Moon Area’s Amanda Schiavo, Freeport Area’s Lauren Frazetta and West Allegheny’s Allie Hamilton.

The Pittsburgh versus Cleveland “Border Wars” rivalry continues with this Third Annual match that will have some of the finest senior high school girls’ volleyball players that you will see anywhere representing these two neighboring states.

The “Terrific 21” Girls’ Volleyball Program All-Star team will be coached by West Allegheny head coach Brian Begor and Upper St. Clair head coach Yoko Nagao.
