Penn-Ohio Foootball Classic sees firsts in 33rd annual game
The Penn-Ohio All-Star Football Classic has been played every year since 1980 and is now the longest running series between the same teams in the state. Despite that history, though, the 33rd annual game saw some firsts.
Played at Springfield Local High School in New Middletown, Ohio, on Friday, June 29, the game was delayed one hour and 28 minutes because of lightning.
Although the weather has been a factor before, it was the first time the start of the game had been delayed by lightning and had officials considering alternatives, although there really weren’t any. Many players and coaches had vacation plans that started the next day and NCAA regulations would not have permitted the game to be delayed into July.
The delay did take a toll, however, as both teams came out less than crisp. There were seven penalties in the first quarter and each team was flagged for over 100 yards in penalties.
Pennsylvania scored first but Ohio responded quickly and the game remained tied at 7-7 until the fourth quarter when Ohio scored twice for a 19-7 win. Pennsylvania now leads the series 23-10 and next year’s game will be played at Geneva College’s Reeves Field on June 28, 2013.
