Division 1 girls lacrosse semifinals feature rematches

Pregame introductions shouldn't take very long when the WPIAL Division 1 girls semifinals take place on successive nights at North Hills.

At 7:30 p.m. on Monday, No. 2 Peters Township puts a 14-4 record on the line when it meets No. 4 Mt. Lebanon, which enters the game with a 12-5 record.

One night later, top-ranked Pine-Richland meets one of the two teams to put a blemish on its record as the Rams meet No. 3 Shady Side Academy.

Monday's game will settle what has now become a best-of-three series between the Indians and the Blue Devils. Back on April 12, Mt. Lebanon was the sixth victim in what turned out to be a 10-game winning streak that began the Indians' season and at the time put them at the top of the Laxpower.com rankings for Western Pennsylvania.

But an 11-10 out-of-state loss to Cleveland Heights touched off a stretch that touched off a stretch where Peters Township has alternated losses with wins in the past eight games. Among those losses was a 12-10 home-field loss to Mt. Lebanon on May 3.

Losses to Seneca Valley (8-7 in double-overtime on May 7) and Sewickley Academy (13-11 on May 11). But the Indians regained their footing as they won a rematch with Sewickley Academy, 10-5, on Thursday in the first round of the playoffs.

Mt. Lebanon caught fire at the end of the season, winning five games in a row before dropping its regular-season finale to Pine-Richland. Regardless of the result of this games, the team is assured of at least one more game as the loser meets the loser of Tuesday's game between Pine-Richland and Shady Side Academy.

Those teams met just once in the regular season, and the Indians captured a 20-14 victory that snapped a five-game Rams' winning streak that began the season.

Pine-Richland then won five more games before losing a No. 1 vs. No.2 showdown with visiting Peters Township, 13-10. The Rams, though, have regained the No. 1 spot in the Laxpower.com regional rankings for Western Pennsylvania girls lacrosse teams with successive victories over No. 10 Sewickley Academy (14-12), No. 7 Quaker Valley (13-12), No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (16-10) and border rival North Allegheny (14-10) in the regular-season finale.

Shady Side Academy has lost just twice this season, but both losses for the 12-2 Indians have come against Peters Township. Shady Side lost to Peters Township, 17-10, on April 19. A week later, Peters Township completed the sweep with a home-field 14-13 overtime victory.

To get another shot at Peters Township, Shady Side has to vanquish a Pine-Richland opponent that it defeated by six goals.
