Grand slam lifts Central Catholic
M.P. Buckley is one of the top power hitters in the WPIAL.
On Wednesday, Buckley's third-inning grand slam powered Central Catholic to a share of the section championship with a 7-0 victory against visiting Woodland Hills.
The Vikings (14-4, 10-2), who have won six games in a row, forced a first-place tie with Plum (14-4, 10-2) in Class AAAA Section 4.
Buckley, a junior, has hit seven home runs this season, including six in the past five games.

• Luke Brumbaugh's run-scoring single in the 10th helped host Seton-LaSalle (11-8, 8-6) eliminate Quaker Valley (10-6, 8-6) from playoff contention with a 3-2 win in Class AA Section 1.
• Brendan McKay threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run to help Class AAA No. 1 Blackhawk (17-2, 12-2) win the Section 1 title with a 3-0 victory at Beaver (12-7, 9-5).
• Kaleb Susko's three RBIs propelled defending WPIAL finalist Chartiers-Houston (12-6, 8-4) back to the playoffs with a 4-2 win against host Monessen (8-9, 3-8) in Class A Section 3.
• Gateway (9-8, 7-5) earned a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 by defeating host Kiski Area (9-9, 4-8), 9-0, in Class AAAA Section 4.
Softball
• In a non-section matchup of unbeaten teams, Class AA No. 2 Sto-Rox (17-0) earned a 4-3, 10-inning win against Class AA No. 5 Seton-LaSalle (14-1). Aimee Miller singled in the winning run for the host Vikings.
• Kirsten Wilson struck out 17 and added a two-run home run to give Class AA No. 4 Riverside (14-2, 12-2) a 7-2 win at Beaver (7-10, 5-9) in Section 5.
Girls lacrosse
• Elise Medeiros scored five goals for host Ellis School in a 12-10 win against Winchester Thurston in Division 2 Section 1.
