Division 2 girls lacrosse playoffs should feature many exciting games

Written by Joe Koch on .

Is there any doubt that the WPIAL Division 2 girls lacrosse playoffs could feature a number of outstanding games before a championship is determined?

Sometimes, looks can be deceiving. But the quality of play in Division 2 has been stellar this season.

Chartiers Valley is currently atop the classification's Section 1 with an overall mark of 15-1 and a section record of 14-1. Right behind the Colts is Bethel Park (13-1, 12-1). Those two teams split their season series with Bethel Park winning the season opener between the two teams, 12-10, and Chartiers Valley taking the rematch 12-5. Chartiers Valley finishes the regular season with a home game on Monday against section rival Baldwin (11-4), which is in third place at 10-3.

Bethel Park finishes its regular season with successive games against Greesnburg Central Catholic, Baldwin and Greensburg Salem beginning on Tuesday. Bethel Park won all three first meetings between the two schools, but the game with Baldwin on Wednesday figures to be a close one. Bethel Park won the first game between the Black Hawks and the Highlanders, 12-11.

In Section 2, a similar story is playing out as defending Division 2 champion North Hills is taking serious aim at its second straight unbeaten season.

Coming off a 20-0 record last year, the Indians are 15-0 overall and 14-0 in section play. North Hills has played all but one of its games against Section 2 opponents this season. The Indians have games remaining with Hampton and Shaler Area to close out the regular season on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games should be highly competitive. In the earlier meetings, North Hills defeated Hampton, 15-10, and Shaler, 16-14. Like the two games this week, both of the earlier games were played in succession.

Two wins would wrap up first place for North Hills as both Shaler (8-2) and Hampton (11-2) have twice lost in the section. North Hills has sewn up a playoff berth, as have the Titans and the Talbots. Vincentian Academy (4-6) is trailing Blackhawk (7-8), but the Royals have several games-in-hand. Vincentian played Shaler Area on Friday, and plays three games on successive days against Butler Area (5-7), Hampton (11-3) and Blackhawk on Tuesday.
