Sarah Spencer profiles the Hempfield softball team, the Post-Gazette's girls team of the year.
"With so many playoff-bound teams and memorable championship runs, it's hard for Hempfield softball coach Bob Kalp to choose the best Spartans team he's coached after 21 seasons at the school.
His '99 state championship team was one for the books, but so was last year's, winning WPIAL and PIAA championships with the strong battery of pitcher Morgan Ryan and catcher Madi Stoner. This year's team was the first group of Spartans to go undefeated, stealing the title of best Hempfield team from last year's.
"Their reign only lasted one year," Kalp said. "Statistically speaking, anybody who would analyze it would say this is the best team we've had."
Hempfield finished 27-0, defeating Latrobe, 13-2, in the WPIAL Class 6A championship and Hazleton, 5-3, in the PIAA Class 6A championship, earning the Post-Gazette's girls team of the year. The Spartans have won back-to back state championships and three WPIAL titles in a row, the senior class missing the playoffs in 2013-14 a blip on its radar at this point."
