Softball: Strong Hazleton team poses challenge to Hempfield's historical run

Written by Mike White on .

Mike White profiles the Hempfield softball team.

"Excellent pitching and good defense have fueled what could be a historical season for the Hempfield softball team. But standing in the way of the Spartans' final step is a team that has been terrific offensively.

So when Hempfield plays Hazleton for the PIAA Class 6A championship this afternoon, it figures to be an intriguing matchup between the team that doesn't give up many runs against a team that scores often.

Hempfield (26-0) takes on Hazleton (22-3), 4 p.m. at Penn State's Nittany Lion Softball Park. A Hempfield win would make the Spartans only the third team from the WPIAL to go through a season with a perfect record, and the first ever from the WPIAL to win back-to-back PIAA titles.

Hempfield features standout pitcher Morgan Ryan, a senior and Notre Dame recruit who is 21-0 this season and 72-6 in her fabulous career. She has close to 600 career strikeouts."
