While the seasons of the top two teams in Section 1-AAAA, Norwin and Penn-Trafford, are now at an end, the section's third place finisher is still alive.
Hempfield (18-9) won in its Class AAAA PIAA playoff opener against Obama Academy on Friday, 54-33. It'll play Fox Chapel on Tuesday at Gateway high school. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
The Spartans went on an impressive run in the WPIAL playoffs, pulling off upset after upset. They opened with a win over heavyweight Upper St. Clair, before bouncing Bethel Park and top-seeded North Allegheny.
Up by 15 points in the WPIAL final, Hempfield looked to have things in control before Penn-Trafford went on an eye-popping 31-5 run.
Still, if there was any lingering disappointment, they didn't show it in their PIAA opener. Hempfield jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. After a relatively even second frame, it pulled away at the start of the second half.
Monica Burns, a stalwart throughout the season, led the Spartans with 21 points. Leah Knizner added 10 herself.
