Girls Soccer: Early-season gauntlet awaits new-look Greensburg C.C.

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Greensburg Central Catholic will have to find players to replace Frannie Crouse and Malea Fabean, a pair of players who combined to scored 110 goals last season. Oh yeah, and the Centurions will have all of one game to find replacements. The schedule makers did first-year coach Bryan Cartwright no favors in having his team open section play with No. 1 Shady Side Academy on September 3 and No. 2 Springdale on September 5.

"I believe we are as good as Shady Side Academy," Cartwright said. "I think we are going to be a good balanced team. I don't foresee us entrenching too much. Between us, Shady Side and Springdale, it is going to be a tight battle this year. Last year everyone thought we were the team to beat and records showed that we were but look at what Shady Side Academy did in the WPIAL championships."

A year ago the Centurions finished 21-2 overall with its only losses coming in the season opener to Class AAA Pine-Richland and in the WPIAL Class A final to Shady Side Academy. They won Section 4-A with a perfect 12-0 record but were downed by Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL final in a stunning 4-2 upset. They had outscored the Indians by 10 goals in the regular season. Still the veteran team rallied back to reach the state final and capture the PIAA championship with a 2-1 win over Southern Columbia.

"I would rather have more time to prepare for those two games," Cartwright said. "We will see them again, the first game can kind of be a see where we are kind of thing and the second game we have to be prepared and ready and up to the challenge."
