Winning the WPIAL Class 3A team tennis championship certainly has its perks.
By knocking off Peters Township in the championship match, Fox Chapel got an easy match with City League champion Perry in the preliminary round of the state playoffs. And by easy, the Foxes won all five matches, 6-0, 6-0, in a rare perfect day.
Their next time on the court won't be quite as much of a joyride. Fox Chapel will open the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals at Hershey Racquet Club with a matchup against District 1 third-place finisher Great Valley.
Fox Chapel has the No. 1 ranked sophomore in the state in WPIAL singles runner-up Robby Shymansky, who lost to Peters Township freshman Connor Bruce, ranked No. 4 in his class, in a three-set thriller in the individual finals. Shymansky, though, will have to take on the No. 5 freshman in Sameer Gangoli, who finished fifth in District 1 in singles.
Fox Chapel lost to two-time defending champion Lower Merion last year and, if the Foxes make it to the finals, would likely have to face the team once again. Great Valley did not make the state playoffs in 2016.
