Gannon junior forward Jen Papich was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Papich, a Fox Chapel graduate, led Gannon, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II to a sweep last week, defeating No. 21 Edinboro (71-62) and Clarion (79-59). Papich averaged 20 points and 5.5 rebounds during the two games, while shooting 60 percent (15-25) from the field and 72.7 percent (8-11) from the free throw line.
Papich began the week with a season-high 26 points, six rebounds and two blocks against Edinboro, helping Gannon stretch its first-place lead in the PSAC West to two games. Gannon faced a 32-27 halftime deficit, but Papich poured in 15 points during the second half as Gannon rallied. With Gannon holding a 49-48 lead, Papich scored seven straight points to put Gannon in control 56-48 with 5:58 to play.
Papich added 14 points, five rebounds and two assists during only 26 minutes of a 20-point win against Clarion. She scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 24th women’s basketball player in school history to reach that milestone.
