Written by Brad Everett on .

After winning the Class AAA Section 2 title with a perfect record, Elizabeth Forward hopes to keep up its winning ways when it begins the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs this week.

Elizabeth Forward (20-2), the No. 5 seed, plays No. 12 Mars (15-7) in a first-round game Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.

Mars was the runner-up in Section 1 with a 10-2 record. The Planets have won four of their last five games and nine of 11. Of the Planets seven losses, four came to teams seeded in the top six in Class AAA (No. 6 Hampton twice, No. 1 Blackhawk and No. 2 Hopewell). The Planets average 51.7 points per game and give up 41.1 per game. They are led by sophomore forward Ali Goetz.

Elizabeth Forward went 12-0 in section play. The Warriors lost to No. 3 seed South Park in the regular-season finale. Prior to that, the Warriors had won 17 games in a row since their only other loss, a 53-49 decision to South Miami, Fla. in the KSA Classic tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Warriors score 56 points a game and allow 35.9 per game. They have the No. 4 scoring defense in Class AAA. The Warriors are led by senior forward Dana Buck.

These teams last met a season ago on Dec. 19, 2011, with Elizabeth Forward grabbing a 40-34 win. Elizabeth Forward went on to advance to the WPIAL quarterfinals. Mars, which lost in the first round, is looking to advance past the first round for the first time since 2009.
