For the third straight season, the Deer Lakes baseball team won the Section 3-AA title. The playoff-bound Lancers, who shared the pennant with both Freeport and Burrell last season, also won the section crown outright in 2011.
“I’ve liked the kids’ attitudes,” Deer Lakes coach Jon Pedrosky said. “The kids are coming to play hard and work every day. They are playing for each other and building on knowing that we can compete.”
Ranked No. 4 in Class AA by the Post-Gazette, Deer Lakes (14-3, 11-0) picked up an 11-1 win over West Shamokin on May 2. Junior pitcher Todd Coleman earned the victory and helped his own cause by supplying two hits and two RBIs. Junior Matt Olsenevich also drove in a pair of runs for the Lancers.
Deer Lakes, which began its season with a 1-2 overall record, won 11 straight games until losing a 3-2 exhibition game against Class AAA’s Ambridge on April 27.
The Lancers have won 13 of their last 14 games and have held opponents to one run or less six times during that stretch.
