Charleroi girls' basketball team gears up for stretch run

In the midst of its longest winning streak since 2011, Charleroi is hoping its momentum continues long enough to win a section title in a few weeks.

Charleroi (11-5, 6-1) has won five games in a row and is in second place in Class AA Section 5. The Cougars’ only loss came to section leader McGuffey (13-1, 6-0) on Jan 3.

Next up is a three-game stretch in which the Cougars play at third-place Washington (8-6, 5-2) tonight and at McGuffey next Monday. A home game against South Side Beaver is sandwiched in between. Earlier this season, the Cougars defeated Washington, 39-35, and downed South Side Beaver, 50-40.

Charleroi has used an excellent defense to key its run of wins. The Cougars have not given up more than 38 points during the streak, holding all but one of their opponents to 33 or less.

Coached by Joe Grodz, the Cougars are led by junior guard Mia Woytovich.
