Butler hockey team close to ending long playoff drought

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

The Butler hockey team won just one game last season and hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2004.

But the Tornadoes are on the cusp of ending the drought.

Butler defeated Central Catholic, 4-3, Monday night, getting two goals from Tanner Gilliland and 30 saves from Clay Bachman.

The win gave the Tornadoes 14 points for the season. In Class AAAA, the top 12 teams make the Penguins Cup, and Butler is currently eight points ahead of 13th place Penn-Trafford, which has five games remaining.

The Tornadoes have seven games remaining, including a game against the Warriors and one against Mt. Lebanon, which is currently in the final playoff spot with eight points.
