Burgettstown softball team looks to young players

Veteran Burgettstown coach Mark Deer hopes talent can overcome inexperience this season.

Now in his 18th year, Deer knows he has a young team but he also knows of the talent. Last season the Blue Devils went 16-3 and won the Class AA Section 2 title.

This year Burgettstown will rely on five freshmen, first baseman Cheyenne Winters, second baseman Shania Winters, outfielder Cassie Carnes, first baseman Kate Tarr and second baseman Morgan Eller. Carnes, Tarr and Eller can all pitch.

His returning starters include senior shortstop Lizzie Strain, a .382 batter last season who was named to the all-section team. Junior pitcher Bryanna Lonick is also back. She was 13-3 last season with a 2.29 ERA and 85 strikeouts. Lonick can also hit, she batted .365, and play the field at first base.

Senior outfielder Alissa Torboli is another returning starter, she hit .269 last season and is expected to bat third this year.
