Girls Tennis: Freshman leads Blackhawk into WPIAL playoffs

Blackhawk may have the only freshman playing No. 1 singles in Section 2, but the Cougars had enough to qualify for the WPIAL 2A team playoffs.

On Wednesday, Blackhawk clinched third-place in the section behind defending WPIAL champion Beaver Area and Neshannock with a win over Quaker Valley in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Blackhawk now heads into the postseason led by freshman Julianna Begley with seniors Tara Pettner and Natalie Fry in the three singles slots.

Background: Blackhawk has proven to be one of the most exciting teams of the new WPIAL season. The Cougars defeated Knoch, 28-27, the first week and lost to Mars, 24-21, on the last play of the game last week. Compared to last season, though, the excitement is welcomed as the Cougars opened last season with eight straight losses under then first year coach Joe Lamenza. Senior quarterback Michael Savilisky has been a big part of the turnaround in his second year as the starting quarterback. In the two games this season, he already has over 100 yards rushing and 100 passing.

Cross Country: Blackhawk boys, girls fare well at weekend invitational

The Blackhawk boys took third place at the Red, White and Blue Invitational on Saturday. Greensburg Salem took first, while Beaver grabbed second.

Freshman Reese O'Leary led the way for Blackhawk. He finished 23rd with a time of 18:09.1. Will Portzline was second for the Cougars. The junior took 50th with a time of 19:26.6. Junior Joshua Stoner finished in 81st place.

The girls team finished in sixth place. Freshman Katy Ross and junior Skye Fogle took 66th and 67 place, respectively.

Golf: Blackhawk girls roll past Ambridge

Ally Zernick and her Blackhawk teammates earned a nice victory on Thursday over Ambridge.

While Zernick posted a winning score of 42, her teammates displayed some consistency in a 183-240 victory over the Bridgers. Blackhawk averaged 45.75 strokes per player en route to the victory.

The boys team also earned a nice victory on Thursday as Tyler Robinson posted a round of 40 as the Cougars defeated Montour, 215-239.

Girls Tennis: West Feature Athlete - Blackhawk's Julianna Begley

Sport: Girls Tennis

Background: Begley is one of the few freshmen to take over as the No. 1 player on their respective teams this season and the only one in Class 2A Section 2. She is also the only freshman to play in any of the top three singles slots for any team in that section. Begley will get a true test Wednesday when she takes on defending WPIAL 2A singles champion Anne Taylor of Beaver.
