Baseball: Bethel Park eyes another stellar spring

Written by Brad Everett on .

Over the past few seasons, Bethel Park has been one of the top teams in WPIAL Class AAAA.

The Black Hawks hope to continue that run of excellent play this spring.

Bethel Park sported a 2-2 record heading into Monday's trip to Central Catholic. All of Bethel Park's games have been close. The Black Hawks own a 4-1 win against Thomas Jefferson and a 4-3 triumph against Hampton. Their losses were to Fox Chapel, 3-2, and Pine-Richland, 8-7.

The Black Hawks have a nice blend of seniors and underclassmen. The senior starters are catcher Connor Nave, first baseman Harry Siwik, right fielder Mitch Nordstrom and designated hitter Carmen Jansante. Senior Bailey Fertig is one of the top pitchers.

The other starters are junior shortstop Zac Forsyth, junior second baseman Luke Hahey, junior center fielder Joe Zufall, pitcher Corey Augenstein, sophomore Tylar Shoemaker and freshman third baseman Colin Loughman.

Bethel Park, coached by Tony Fisher, is scheduled to play its Section 5 opener against Upper St. Clair.

The Black Hawks were 49-14 the last three seasons. They placed second in the section in 2013, first in 2012 and second in 2011. The Black Hawks advanced to WPIAL quarterfinals last season.
