Girls' Basketball: South Feature Athlete - Bethel Park's Harper Zimmer

Written by Brad Everett on .

Name: Harper Zimmer
School: Bethel Park
Grade: 11
Sport: Girls Basketball
Position: Guard

Background: Zimmer, a 5-foot-6 junior scored 11 points – all in the first half – to help Bethel Park win its first WPIAL basketball championship after a 48-36 victory against Chartiers Valley in the Class AAAA title game Saturday at Palumbo Center. Zimmer also scored 11 points in Bethel Park’s 36-28 semifinal win against Gateway. Bethel Park (23-3) plays Mt. Lebanon (22-3) in a PIAA first-round game Friday at Baldwin.

Coach Jonna Burke said: “Harper is often our defensive spark plug. She plays great D, but she is also our fiery leader. She’s always talking in the huddle and telling everybody to “Let’s go.” For her to hit a few of those early shots I thought was really important. A lot of teams try to key on Megan (Marecic). They think if she doesn’t hit some shots, then Bethel Park might struggle. But I think as of late we’ve proven that we do have some other kids who can put the ball in the hoop, and [Zimmer] was one who stepped up [in the WPIAL championship].”
