Avonworth boys' basketball team on top of its game

Most figured Quaker Valley or Sto-Rox would hold down the Class AA Section 6 lead at this point in the season.

Instead, Avonworth has raced to the top.

After a 4-6 start, Avonworth has won seven games in a row – five in the section – and find themselves 11-6 overall and 7-2 in the section.

The Antelopes moved in front of Sto-Rox (9-7, 6-2) after beating the visiting Vikings, 45-42, Saturday. Senior Ryan Pearson scored a team-high 19 points for the Antelopes, who trailed by three at the half.

Avonworth faces another challenge tonight when it travels to third-place Quaker Valley (12-4, 5-3). Quaker Valley defeated Avonworth, 38-36, on Jan. 4. Quaker Valley’s Burke Moser burned the Antelopes by scoring 18 points in that game.

The Antelopes have been outstanding defensively as of late, holding eight of their past nine opponents to fewer than 50 points.
