They might not have won the WPIAL 2A team title, but the McGuffey boys golf team appears to have established a solid foundation for future seasons.
Finishing a respectable second behind perennial 2A power Sewickley Academy, the Highlanders qualified two players for the PIAA Western Regional.
Senior Colin Chapman finished fifth with a 4-over-par round of 74 at the WPIAL 2A Individual Championship at Allegheny Country Club, which serves as the home course for Sewickley Academy.
Chapman has since graduated, but teammate Hunter Donahue enters his senior season with a solid 11th-place finish at the WPIAL championship. Another McGuffey player entering his senior year this fall is David Chapman, who placed 20th at the WPIAL final with a round of 84. A fourth player, the since-graduated Erik Kasperowski, was 32nd in the 44-player field at the WPIAL final with an 89.
Colin Chapman and Doahune built upon those solid WPIAL finishes by qualifying for the PIAA 2A Indvidual Championship at York's Heritage Hills Resort.
At the PIAA Western Regional at Blairsville's Tom's Run Golf Course, Chapman finished in a third-place tie with South Park senior Daniel Morgret. Each shot 3-over-par rounds of 75. Donahue was four strokes behind Chapman, and his round of 77 put him in a three-way tie for ninth place with Southmoreland senior Josh Redding and Saegertown senior Jake Sada.
Chapman earned all-state honors with a two-day total at the PIAA 2A Individual Championship with a two-day total of 161, which was 19-over-par. The top 10 finishers earned all-state honors and what likely earned him a top 10 medal was his round of 77 in the second round.
Donahue just missed all-state honors. He finished in a five-way tie for 12th place with a two-day total of 163. Still, the experience of playing in a state final likely will give him the experience he needs to take the next step.
