Girls Tennis: 2016 West Season Recap

Montour was expected to have a team that could have competed for the WPIAL Class 3A team title.

That was before sophomore Katherine Marks transferred to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Instead, the team had to settle for a berth in the team playoffs and an outstanding individual performance from junior Isabela Paixao, who made it into the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals before losing to eventual champion Maria Santilli of Norwin, 6-0, 6-4. She finished fourth overall after she dropped the third-place consolation match and missed out at a berth in the state tournament berth in a 6-2, 6-1 loss to freshman Bethany Yauch of Baldwin.

As for Marks, the drop in classification helped as she rolled through the WPIAL singles tournament and defeated freshman Elle Santora of Knoch, 6-3, 6-0, to give the Chargers their first tennis championship. Marks also had a solid showing at the state finals when she made it into the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Emily Gordon of Grove City and won the third-place consolation match, 6-0, 6-0, against 2015 WPIAL Class 2A singles champion Anne Taylor of Beaver.

While Taylor finished a disappointing fourth in the individual tournament, she and her Bobcats teammates won their second consecutive WPIAL Class 2A team title with a 5-0 victory over Neshannock. Like the year before, when they lost to Mercyhurst Prep, 4-1, in the finals, the Bobcats made it all the way to the championship match before losing, 3-1, to Wyomissing.

Sewickley Academy remains the only WPIAL school to win a PIAA girls team tennis championship. The Panthers defeated Wyomissing, 5-0, in 2011.
