The 100-meter dash and long jump don't exactly go hand in hand, but for two West area athletes, excellence in those events go together perfectly.
Beaver's Darius Wise and Hopewell's Dantae Ranieri have raced to similar success this season as both boast the WPIAL's best marks in those events in their respective classes.
On Monday, the WPIAL released its first performance list of the season, an event-by-event listing of top times and marks that will be used to determine WPIAL championship qualifiers. Wise ranks No. 1 in Class 3A in the 100 and long jump. Ranieri ranks No. 1 in 2A in the 100 and long jump.
Wise, a senior who will play football at Colorado State, blazed to a time of 10.91 in the 100 and produced a jump of 22 feet, 8 inches at the Warrior Classic on April 8. Ranieri, a junior, has top marks of 11.23 in the 100 and 22-5 in the long jump. He also has the second-best high jump in 2A with a leap of 6-4.
