Girls Basketball: South Park, Elizabeth Forward reach second round

Both South Park and Elizabeth Forward earned convincing victories in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA girls basketball tournament.

South Park, the WPIAL Class AAA runner-up, earned a 65-48 victory over section rival Trinity, the No. 6 team from the WPIAL, at Moon High School this past Saturday. The victory improved the Eagles' overall record to 22-5. They meet District 10 champion Hickory at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Slippery Rock University. The Hornets are 26-0 following a 63-37 first-round victory over Johnstown.

Section 4-AAA champion Elizabeth Forward improved to 21-4 overall with a 52-30 victory over District 9 champion Bradford Area. The Warriors meet Section 3-AAA co-champion Mount Pleasant in a second-round game at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Chapel. The Vikings improved to 16-9 overall with a 58-51 victory over District 6 champion Huntingdon at Hollidaysburg. The winner of this game faces a long trip in the quarterfinals as it meet the winner of the second-round game between Palmyra, a District 3 (Harrisburg area) team and Merion Mercy Academy, which plays in District 1 (Philadelphia suburbs).
