Freeport, Mars to meet in hockey for second time in 15 days

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

When Freeport played Mars on Jan. 9, the Yellowjackets carried a six-game winning streak into the game.

But the Planets handed Freeport its first loss since a Dec. 3 defeat to Quaker Valley, winning 4-1.

The two teams will meet again tonight, and this time Freeport will try to ruin Mars’ long unbeaten streak.

Mars hasn’t lost since Quaker Valley beat it 5-2 on Nov. 15, going 10-0-1 since. The Planets are now 12-2-1, just ahead of Freeport (11-2-1).

In the first meeting, Christian Knapp stopped 21-of-22 shots to earn the win. His counterpart, freshman Matt Huston, saved 28-of-31 shots.

Craig Mazzotta, Mars’ leading scorer this season, tallied two goals against the Yellowjackets. Owen Vasbinder and Max Master each added a goal.

Hunter Kepple had Freeport’s lone goal.
