Boys Golf: Leechburg's Barto finishes third at regional

Leechburg High's Matt Barto was part of a sweep of the first four positions at Wednesdasy's PIAA Class AA Boys Western Regional Individual Golf Championships at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

Barto, who won the WPIAL Class AA Individual Championship in a one-hole playoff over Gunnar Riley defeated the Charleroi senior again at the regional championship with an even-par round of 72. Riley shot a 1-over-par round of 73, but both trailed Sewickley Academy's Keenan Hickton and Burgettstown's Cody Dobbin, who shot rounds of 69 and 71, respectively. Hickton's round was 3-under-par. Dobbin was 1-under-par.

Those four -- along with the next 16 finishers -- qualified for the PIAA Class AA Individual Championships which will be played on Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Resort in York.


Girls Golf: Two East underclassmen qualify for state tournament

At the WPIAL Class AA girls individual championship, Freeport sophomore Audrey Clawson began her round with a 10 on her first hole, the No. 10 hole at Hill Crest Golf Club in Lower Burrell.

Discarding the cast she was wearing to protect a broken ring finger on her left hand, Clawson played well enough to qualify as the No. 7 golfer from the WPIAL for Wednesday's PIAA Class AA Individual Western Regional Championship at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

Her success continued there as she qualified for the state championship as she placed seventh with a 9-over-par round of 81.

Qualifying with her is Greensburg Central Catholic freshman Olivia Zambruno, who was the 10th -- and final -- qualifier with a 12-over-par round of 84.


Girls Soccer: East Playoff Preview (First Round)

Class AAA Section 1 may be feeling slightly disrespected after the WPIAL playoff pairings meeting. Section champion Penn Trafford (12-5) was relegated to a No. 7 seed, Norwin, a team ranked No. 1 at times this season in the Post-Gazette rankings was given a No. 8 seed despite a 14-2-2 record and No. 15 Latrobe (11-6-1) is the lowest seed in the field. The Warriors play No. 10 Pine-Richland (11-5-2) at Norwin at 2 p.m., the Knights host No. 9 Canon McMillan (12-3-3) at 4 p.m. and the Wildcats visit No. 2 Peters Township (13-4-1).

All WPIAL first round playoff games will be played on Saturday. One of the few teams not playing on Saturday is Greensburg Central Catholic (14-1), the No. 1 seed in Class A and the defending WPIAL and PIAA champion. The Centurions have a first-round bye and are the clear cut favorites to defend both their WPIAL and PIAA titles. Greensburg Central Catholic boasts two of the top playmakers in the history of WPIAL soccer, seniors Frannie Crouse and Malea Fabean.

In Class AA, Yough was decimated by injury and the loss of its top player this offseason, but the Cougars persevered and made the playoffs. No. 6 Yough (14-4) will open the playoffs by hosting No. 11 Elizabeth Forward (11-3-4) at 1 p.m.
