Boys Golf: 2016 East Season Recap

Written by Joe Koch on .

For the most part, golf is such an individual sport. But there are occasions -- such as the Ryder Cup -- when the sport's team aspect takes center stage, and a teammate's effort can mean the difference between an unbridled sense of elation and abject dejection.

Central Catholic's golf team experienced the former emotions with solid efforts to win both the WPIAL and PIAA 3A team championships.

Played at York's Heritage Hills Resort, the Vikings took open the PIAA 3A championship with a team score of 297 that was nine strokes ahead of runner-up Nazareth, the District 11 champion.

Sophomore Jimmy Meyers gave the Vikings the shot in the arm they needed. Playing in the No. 5 slot, Meyers shot a 1-over-par round of 72 that was just two strokes off the top score of 70 registered by Central York junior Joe Parrini.

Want to see the best out of a competitor? Throw a little disappointment in his or her direction and see how that athlete responds.

That's what happened with Greensburg Central Catholic senior and Penn State recruit Olivia Zambruno en route to what should have been a third successive WPIAL 2A championship.

But rather than be in the familiar role of accepting the first-place award, Zambruno found herself trailing Central Valley sophomore Kiaria Porter by two strokes and tied for second place with Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic freshman Maddie Smithco. Each shot rounds of 80.

Zambruno learned that a round of golf can change at a moment's notice. She also learned that attention has to be paid to the last detail.
