Softball: 2017 East Season Recap

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

There have been some great teams in Hempfield history and some great teams in the WPIAL this year with the area winning four of the six PIAA titles. But it seems the story with the Hempfield 2017 team stands above all. Bob Kalp's 21st edition was sensational, finishing 27-0, winning the WPIAL Class 6A title with a 13-2 win over section rival Latrobe and winning the PIAA Class 6A title with a 5-3 win over Hazleton. The program has now won back-to-back state titles and three straight WPIAL titles.

Hempfield senior pitcher Morgan Ryan was the Post-Gazette Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. The Notre Dame recruit is one of the best players to ever come out of the area. She was 22-0 this season with eight shutouts and a 1.00 ERA. She wraps up her career with a 73-6 career record. She also batted .462 with 37 RBIs. She was hardly alone on a stacked Hempfield team. Senior outfielder Autumn Beasley hit .437 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs.

Mount Pleasant shared the Class 4A Section 1 title with Knoch. In the state playoffs there would be no sharing. Mount Pleasant put an stamp on its successful season with a 5-3 win over Tunkhannock to capture a PIAA title. The Vikings finished with 17 wins and vanquished WPIAL rivals Belle Vernon and Yough on the way to the PIAA final. Yough reached the WPIAL Class 4A final and PIAA semifinals and finished the season with 19 wins.

Baseball: 2017 East Season Recap

Written by Brad Everett on .

Latrobe's Zach Kokoska had himself a season.

Kokoska was so good offensively and on the mound that he was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year.

But chances are Kokoska was just as happy about the success of his team.

After all, there was plenty of it.

It was a season to remember for Latrobe, which won WPIAL and PIAA titles for the first time in school history. The Wildcats went 24-2 overall, claimed the Class 5A Section 3 title with a 14-0 record, and closed the season on a 17-game winning streak. The dominant stretch included a 6-2 win against Mars in the WPIAL championship and a 7-0 triumph against Whitehall in the PIAA championship.
