Let’s start in the East with the pigtail game between Albert Gallatin and Franklin Regional (10-12, 5-7). This game will happen Friday (February 15). On the opposite bracket, something similar will happen for Latrobe (9-13, 6-8) The Wildcats will face Baldwin, also in a preliminary round game.
Another cool preliminary matchup will be the Norwin (12-10, 10-4)/Penn Hills (9-13, 5-7), game. This one is scheduled for Friday.
East basketball fans will love the Gateway (18-4, 10-2)/Oakland Catholic (9-13, 8-4) matchup, scheduled as a first-round game for Tuesday, February 19. Equally intriguing is the Friday game in which four-seed Hempfield (19-3, 14-0) is scheduled to take on Upper St. Clair.
There’s one more all-East first round game for Tuesday: it’s Penn Trafford (18-4, 12-2) versus Plum (17-5, 9-3). Overall, the Class AAAA brackets are well represented by East teams… for yet another year.
In the prelims, Mount Pleasant (10-12, 6-6) will take on Keystone Oaks on Saturday (February 16). Greensburg Salem (16-6, 10-2) will begin in the first round will Belle Vernon, a team they beat handily early on. The Golden Lions will be looking to put the Leopards away and advance; this game will happen on Wednesday (February 20).
Perhaps the best-known teams of the East come from the Class AA bracket. Greensburg Central Catholic (16-6, 10-2) will play on Tuesday in the first round, but until then they await the winner of the Beaver Falls/South Side Beaver game. Similarly, Jeannette (15-6, 11-1) plays Tuesday in the first round versus the winner of the Avonworth/Steel Valley game.
It’s important not to leave out Riverview (13-7, 7-5) – who made the playoffs in the team’s first season since moving up to Class AA. The Raiders will play OLSH in a preliminary round game.
Three-seed Burrell (20-2, 10-0) has posted another dominating season thus far. The Buccaneers will play the winner of the Charleroi/Carlynton game.
Winchester Thurston (12-8, 6-4) will start with Union on Wednesday, February 20.
