Jeannette at Greensburg Central Catholic – Thursday, February 7.
This is the game that makes kids along Route 30 go to bed early on Basketball Eve Wednesday– because Thursday the final regular season matchup of Jayhawks and Centurions.
When last we had a matchup between these two great teams, it was January 14 and the Centurions’ won 72-70. Maireade Byrne-Houser shot for 19 points for Greensburg, and Carolyn Appleby added 14.
For Jeannette, Ciara Gregory more-than-doubled Byrne-Houser and Appleby’s combined total. Gregory scored 40 points, followed up by Monique Redman with 15 and Monica Carl (10).
So, where does this take us? Gregory is still the WPIAL’s leading scorer. In the Post-Gazette’s January 25 listing, Gregory was averaging 31.5 points per game. But Greensburg’s Appleby was on the list, too – with 15.0 points per game.
And forget about the shooting stars for a minute – basketball is a team game. Jeanette is rocking a veteran roster right now - players who know each other well and are in their third year of head coach Luanne Mills’ read-and-react offense.
Greensburg is in also in an advantageous team situation, but it’s very different from Jeannette’s. The Centurions are in their first year under head coach Chris Kallock, whose offensive systems are different than those run at Greensburg in the past. Likewise, new players (many of whom are sophomores) are stepping up and creating some chaos this year.
After Greensburg exits the gym on Thursday, the team will be headed to play Belle Vernon as they host the Westmoreland County Hoopfest over the weekend. Ironically, Jeannette will be there too, to face Derry Area.
