Field Hockey: Aquinas forges tie with Class 1A leader Shady Side Academy

Written by Joe Koch on .

Aquinas Academy might not be at the top of the grouping in Section 1A of field hockey. But the Crusaders are making every opponent work in each game.

Another example of that tenacity was a 1-1 tie this past Thursday with visiting Shady Side Academy, which currently is in first place with a 6-0-1 record. The tie represented a huge step forward for Aquinas. In the season opener on Sept. 6, the Indians rolled to a dominating 8-0 victory over the Crusaders.

Earlier in the week, the 3-1-3 Crusaders tied defending WPIAL champion Ellis School, 0-0, and they earlier tied Winchester Thurston, 3-3, on Sept. 8. Those two teams meet again on Tuesday at the Bears' Garland Field. It's a key game as the Bears sit alone in third place at 4-2-1, and the top four teams advance to the WPIAL Class 1A tournament.

Boys Basketball: Tappe pouring in the points for Aquinas Academy

Written by Brad Everett on .

It would be unfair to call Aquinas Academy a "one-man team," but the Crusaders do have a player who has accounted for half of the team's points.

Mike Tappe, a 5-9 junior guard, has poured in 21 points per game. The Crusaders have scored 472 points. Tappe has 237 of them.

Tappe's biggest outing came last week against Vincentian, when he went off for 39 points. That tied a school record, one Tappe set a season ago.

Tappe has been one of the few bright spots for Aquinas, which is 0-11. The Crusaders went 1-20 last season.
