Baseball: Allderdice with a surprising start

Written by Brad Everett on .

Allderdice has gotten off to a strong start this spring.

In fact, the Dragons have been perfect.

A week into the season, Allderdice finds itself with a 3-0 record. The most significant thing about that mark might be that the Dragons have already surpassed last year's win total for the entire season. A season ago, the Dragons finished 2-14.

Allderdice's wins have been impressive, too. The Dragons shut out Serra Catholic, 6-0, in the season opener, followed by a 10-6 triumph against Seton-LaSalle. Both Serra and Seton-LaSalle were playoff teams last season. Tuesday, the Dragons won at Valley, 3-0.

Coached by Jeremy Askin, the Dragons have four seniors, eight juniors and three sophomores on their roster.

The seniors are John Micklo, Mike Gentile, Max Kennedy and Hunter Mervis. The juniors are Nick Bucci, Cameron Jacobson, Solomon Averbach, Evan Cheng, Demetrius Haskins, Kenny Robinson, Mark Pfleger and Nate Fichtner. The sophomores are Sam Greenberg, Phoenix Rouse and Matt Gayda.

Allderdice was scheduled to play its Class AAAA Section 4 opener today at Shaler, but the game was postponed because of rain. It is expected to be played tomorrow at 2 p.m.
