Alumni Update - Julie Friend (California University of Pennsylvania)

LEWISBURG, Pa. – California University of Pennsylvania junior Julie Friend won the 10,000-meter run and brokeFriend CalU the school record with a NCAA provisional time on Friday at the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell.

 

Friend won the 10,000 meters in the invite division with a time of 34 minutes, 42.44 seconds, which was over four seconds faster than the rest of the field. She shattered the previous school mark set by Erin Kling in 2013 by over two minutes.

 

Friend holds the fourth-fastest time in the 10,000 meters in NCAA Division II this season, as the top-three marks were also posted at the Mt. SAC Relays this week in California.


The Uniontown product posted an impressive time of 17:05 during the second half of the race on Friday, which would of been fast enough to break the school record in the 5,000-meter run as recently as last April.

Girls Basketball: Three WPIAL players named state players of the year

Sarah Spencer reports that three WPIAL players were named state players of the year.

"Pine-Richland's Amanda Kalin (23 points per game), Trinity's Sierra Kotchman (19 ppg) and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's Sam Breen (23 ppg) each were voted player of the year in their respective classifications by Pennsylvania sports writers who determine the 2016-17 all-state girls teams. All were previously named to the Post-Gazette's Fabulous Five.

Kalin also was named to the Class 6A first team. Penn Hills' Desiree Oliver (18 ppg) joined Kalin on the first team, and North Allegheny's Rachel Martindale (13 ppg) and Haley Zeise (10 ppg) made the 6A third team. Oliver was a Fabulous Five selection. North Allegheny beat Bethel Park, 50-39, for the WPIAL 6A title before falling to Boyertown in the PIAA title game.

In 5A, Johnasia Cash (18 ppg) of McKeesport and Michaela Porter (15 ppg) of Obama Academy joined Kotchman on the first team. Megan McConnell (15 ppg) of Chartiers Valley made the second team. Chartiers Valley defeated Oakland Catholic, 52-36, in the WPIAL 5A championship."

West Allegheny met Montour in a WPIAL 5A, Sec. 2 baseball game at Burkett Field, Wednesday evening, April 12, 2017. Both teams going in were undefeated in section play. West Allegheny scored four runs and shut out Montour to remain undefeated both in conference and overall play.
