Since 2005, just two names have appeared in the list of champions in the Class AA grouping of WPIAL field hockey. That scenario will play out again as either top-seeded Shady Side Academy or The Ellis School will be the WPIAL Class AA champion.
Game time for the 2015 WPIAL Class AA Field Hockey Championship is 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at North Allegheny High's Newman Stadium. The game's winner advances to the PIAA Class AA playoffs on Nov. 10 where it meets the winner of a play-in game between the District 5 and District 6 champions. The District 7 champion will be hitting the road for the first-round game.
Shady Side Academy was the first Class AA field hockey champion when the WPIAL sanctioned the sport in 1994. In that span, Indians teams have won 13 WPIAL titles. Their bid for a fourth consecutive title was dashed in 2014 when Ellis School earned a 1-0 victory. The Tigers are the second most-dominant team in Class AA history with five WPIAL championships.
Unlike Class AAA where in-season meetings between the two teams competing for the championship are not common, Shady Side and Ellis are familiar with each other. This year, Shady Side took both games by margins of 2-0 and 1-0. The second game was decided in overtime.
Both teams are stingy defensively as each has surrendered seven goals against WPIAL Class AA opponents. Shady Side has scored 67 goals against section rivals; Ellis has scored 36.
Shady Side shut out eight Class AA opponents in the regular season and pitched a ninth shutout in the Class AA semifinal with a 6-0 victory over Winchester Thurston. Ellis shut out six Class AA opponents in the regular season and earned a seventh shutout in the playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Aquinas Academy in the semifinals.
