Football: Week 5 schedule with game notes

Here's a closer look at Week 5 of the WPIAL and City League football season.

Thursday

WPIAL Class AA Interstate Conference
Washington (4-0, 4-0) at Jeanette (4-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – Turn on Root Sports to catch this showdown of undefeated teams. Washington blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in the final seconds to stun Jeannette, 18-15, last season.

Non-Conference
Brashear (1-3) at Erie Strong Vincent (1-3), 7 p.m. – Brashear's lone win came against Westinghouse in Week 3. The Bulls lost to Strong Vincent, 21-14, last season.

Friday

WPIAL Class AAAA Foothills Conference
Altoona (1-3, 1-3) at McKeesport (4-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. – McKeesport scored a season-high 34 points last week against Penn-Trafford, while Altoona has put up only seven points combined its past three games.
Hempfield (3-1, 3-1) at Gateway (4-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. – Another early test for Gateway, which shut out Altoona last week. Hempfield's Joey DeFloria has rushed for 648 yards and eight touchdowns.
Latrobe (1-3, 0-3) at Penn-Trafford (2-2, 2-1), 7:30 p.m. – Penn-Trafford's Devin Austin (590 yards) leads an excellent rushing attack. Latrobe will look to avenge last season's 34-7 defeat.

WPIAL Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference
North Allegheny (3-1, 2-1) at Butler (1-3, 1-3), 7:30 p.m. – After a loss and a one-point win, North Allegheny is presented with a much easier matchup against Butler, which lost to North Hills, 49-0, last week.
Seneca Valley (4-0, 3-0) at Central Catholic (4-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. – This big one will be played along the Monongahela River at Highmark Stadium. Seneca Valley handed the Vikings their first loss last season.

WPIAL Class AAAA Southeastern Conference
Canon-McMillan (0-4, 0-3) at Plum (0-4, 0-4), 7 p.m. – Which of these winless teams will pick up its first victory? They combined for one win last season, with Canon-McMillan edging Plum, 16-13.
Peters Township (2-2, 1-2) at Bethel Park (3-1, 3-1), 7:30 p.m. – Peters Township's Marcus Ubinger rushed for four touchdowns in last week's 48-7 win against Shaler. Bethel Park is fresh off a 31-0 win at Canon-McMillan.
Upper St. Clair (4-0, 4-0) at Baldwin (2-2, 2-2), 7:30 p.m. – Upper St. Clair has allowed a Class AAAA-low 10 points. Baldwin beat Mt. Lebanon last week for the first time since 2004.
Woodland Hills (2-2, 2-1) at Mt. Lebanon (1-3, 1-2), 7:30 p.m. – Coach George Novak's Wolverines have won two straight since opening the season 0-2. Mt. Lebanon's only victory came against Plum.

WPIAL Class AAA Big Nine Conference
Elizabeth Forward (3-1, 3-1) at Uniontown (1-3, 1-3), 7:30 p.m. – Elizabeth Forward's Matt Bernadowski is among the WPIAL leaders with 11 touchdowns. Uniontown is surrendering 42 points per game.
Laurel Highlands (0-4, 0-3) at Trinity (0-4, 0-3), 7:30 p.m. – As their records indicate, both teams are struggling offensively and defensively. The two have been outscored, 337-49.
Ringgold (3-1, 3-1) at West Mifflin (4-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. – Could West Mifflin be on "Upset Alert?" Ringgold has won three straight, scoring 159 points in those games.
Thomas Jefferson (4-0, 3-0) at Albert Gallatin (2-2, 1-2), 7:30 p.m. – Top-ranked Thomas Jefferson is rolling. Albert Gallatin – outside of a 56-12 loss at West Mifflin last week – has been competitive.

WPIAL Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference
Greensburg Salem (1-3, 1-3) at Mars (3-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. – Mars has won three straight since a season-opening loss to Franklin Regional. Greensburg Salem, on the other hand, has dropped three consecutive games.
Hampton (2-2, 1-2) at Knoch (3-1, 2-1), 7 p.m. – Hampton's C.J. Arch ran for three touchdowns in last week's victory at Laurel Highlands. Knoch has won three in a row.
Highlands (3-1, 3-1) at Indiana (2-2, 2-2), 7 p.m. – Highlands hopes to bounce back from a 39-0 home loss against Mars. Indiana returned two interceptions for touchdowns in last week's 56-6 win against Derry.
Hollidaysburg (1-3, 1-2) at Derry (0-4, 0-3), 7 p.m. – Derry has the worst scoring offense (5 points per game) and defense (57.5 ppg.) in Class AAA. Hollidaysburg has three losses, but has been outscored by only 27 points.

WPIAL Class AAA Parkway Conference
Central Valley (4-0, 4-0) at West Allegheny (4-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – Arguably the best matchup in Class AAA so far this season. The two have given up a combined 32 points. Central Valley has allowed a WPIAL-low six points.
Chartiers Valley (1-3, 1-2) at New Castle (3-1, 2-1), 7:30 p.m. – New Castle has been impressive in winning three straight. Chartiers Valley is on a two-game losing streak.
Montour (2-2, 1-2) at Ambridge (0-4, 0-3), 7:30 p.m. – Ambridge has loss each of its games by at least 24 points. Montour (loss last week) has alternated wins and losses.
Moon (3-1, 3-1) at Hopewell (0-4, 0-4), 7 p.m. – Cole Blake leads Moon in rushing and scored four touchdowns last week. Hopewell has been shut out two weeks in a row.

WPIAL Class AA Allegheny Conference
East Allegheny (2-2, 2-2) at Valley (3-1, 3-1), 7:30 p.m. – East Allegheny has allowed just 13 points during its two-game winning streak. Valley won at Freeport, 42-0, last week.
Kittanning (4-0, 3-0) at Burrell (2-2, 1-2), 7:30 p.m. – Kittanning and Shady Side Academy are the only unbeaten teams in the conference. Last week, Burrell lost to Shady Side Academy, 49-14.

WPIAL Class AA Century Conference
McGuffey (1-3, 0-3) at South Park (2-2, 2-1), 7:30 p.m. – South Park has won two straight, while McGuffey is coming off its first win. South Park topped the Highlanders, 20-14, last season.
Quaker Valley (4-0, 4-0) at Steel Valley (2-2, 2-2), 7 p.m. – This is the third week in a row Steel Valley has faced an undefeated team. Quaker Valley's Trewon Marshall scored three touchdowns last week.
Seton-LaSalle (4-0, 4-0) at South Fayette (4-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. – For the second year in a row, these rivals meet with 4-0 records. South Fayette hammered the Rebels, 51-12, a season ago.

WPIAL Class AA Interstate Conference
Greensburg Central Catholic (1-3, 1-2) at Brownsville (0-4, 0-3), 7 p.m. – After three straight losses, the Centurions beat Waynesburg last week. Brownsville has given up at least 35 points in each game.
Mount Pleasant (4-0, 4-0) at Yough (2-2, 2-2), 7 p.m. – It's the start of a challenging three-game run for Mount Pleasant, which next plays Jeannette and Washington. Yough lost to those teams the past two weeks.
Southmoreland (0-4, 0-3) at Waynesburg (2-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. – Southmoreland nearly won its first game last week, but fell to Ford City, 9-6. Waynesburg's John Glen Davis and Bo Hampson have each rushed for just under 400 yards.

WPIAL Class AA Midwestern Conference
Freedom (0-4, 0-3) at New Brighton (3-1, 2-1), 7 p.m. – New Brighton could be without standout quarterback Gabe Greco, who was injured in last week's loss at Aliquippa. Last Season, Freedom edged New Brighton, 17-14.
Mohawk (2-2, 2-1) at Aliquippa (4-0, 2-0), 7 p.m. – Aliquippa has shut out its past two opponents, including New Brighton, 43-0, last week. Mohawk is averaging 26.5 points per game.
Riverside (0-4, 0-3) at Ellwood City (2-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. – Riverside has been outscored, 173-18. Ellwood City's Jared Meyers has rushed for 477 yards, including 196 last week against Chartiers Valley.

WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference
Laurel (3-1, 2-1) at Union (2-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. – Laurel has won two straight, including last week's 34-7 non-conference triumph against Springdale. Union beat Laurel, 38-19, a season ago.
Neshannock (3-1, 3-1) at South Side Beaver (0-4, 0-4), 7 p.m. – Neshannock's Eli Owens and Ernie Burkes have combined for more than 1,000 yards rushing. South Side Beaver lost to Rochester, 27-19, last week.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (1-3, 1-3) at Shenango (1-3, 1-3), 7 p.m. – OLSH has managed to score only seven points the past two weeks. Shenango won last year's meeting, 29-0.
Western Beaver (2-2, 2-1) at Rochester (2-2, 2-1), 7 p.m. – Rochester has surprisingly struggled, but is still 2-1 in conference play. Western Beaver blanked Union, 20-0, last week.

WPIAL Class A Black Hills Conference
Bishop Canevin (2-3, 1-3) at Monessen (3-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. – Will this be a letdown game for Monessen after ending Clairton's streak last week? Probably not. Bishop Canevin lost three in a row.
California (1-3, 1-3) at Serra Catholic (1-4, 1-3), 7:30 p.m. – California earned its first win by topping Bishop Canevin, 28-14, a week ago. The Trojans beat Serra, 48-7, last season.
Chartiers-Houston (4-1, 3-1) at Brentwood (2-3, 2-2), 7:30 p.m. – Chartiers-Houston has won three straight since losing to Clairton in the season opener. Brentwood dropped a 35-14 decision to Fort Cherry last week.
Clairton (3-1, 3-1) at Fort Cherry (4-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. – Will Clairton actually lose two in a row? You've got to like Fort Cherry's chances. The Rangers average 45 points per game and are led by Koltan Kobrys (769 yards rushing).

WPIAL Class A Eastern Conference
Apollo-Ridge (3-1, 2-1) at Avonworth (4-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. – This is an important one for two teams with hopes of winning a conference title. Avonworth's Moses Giles has rushed for 342 yards and seven touchdowns.
North Catholic (4-0, 4-0) at West Shamokin (3-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. – Yet another big game in this conference. West Shamokin is coming off a 48-0 loss to Avonworth last week. North Catholic has scored 98 points its past two games.
Springdale (1-3, 1-2) at Leechburg (0-4, 0-3), 7 p.m. – Leechburg has surrendered 100 points the past two weeks. Springdale has scored only 23 points this season, including 16 in conference play.
Wilkinsburg (2-2, 2-2) at Riverview (0-4, 0-4), 7:30 p.m. – Wilkinsburg shut out Northgate, 16-0, last week. Riverview has scored the fewest points and given up the most points in the conference.

WPIAL Class A Tri-County South Conference
Beth-Center (4-0, 4-0) at West Greene (1-3, 1-3), 7 p.m. – Beth-Center (5.5 ppg) has the No. 2 scoring defense in Class A. The Bulldogs pounded West Greene, 60-6, last season.
Carmichaels (3-1, 2-1) at Mapletown (2-2, 1-2), 7 p.m. – Carmichaels scored a season-high 51 points last week against Vincentian. Mapletown has been outscored, 88-6, in its two losses.
Frazier (3-1, 3-1) at Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-2), 7 p.m. – Frazier's Charlie Manack has passed for 653 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jefferson-Morgan dropped a 27-26 heartbreaker to Avella last week.
Geibel Catholic (0-4, 0-3) at Avella (4-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. – As you might have heard, Avella (five games) now owns the longest winning streak in the WPIAL. The Eagles should be able to extend that to six against Geibel.

Non-Conference
Beaver (2-2) at Blackhawk (1-3), 7:30 p.m. – Beaver quarterback Alex Rowse leads the WPIAL in passing yards (962) and touchdowns (16). Blackhawk is coming off a 41-0 loss at Central Valley.
Beaver Falls (4-0) at Keystone Oaks (0-4), 7 p.m. – This is a bit of a mismatch. Beaver Falls is outscoring opponents, 157-40. Keystone Oaks has been outscored, 200-13.
Belle Vernon (1-3) at Franklin Regional (3-1), 7 p.m. – Franklin Regional bounced back from its first loss by defeating Greensburg Salem, 42-20, last week. Belle Vernon is coming off a 35-13 loss at Elizabeth Forward.
Deer Lakes (0-4) at Charleroi (0-4), 7 p.m. – Charleroi is giving up a WPIAL-high 61 points per game. Deer Lakes lost to East Allegheny, 35-6, a week ago.
Fort Hill, Md. (3-0) at Carrick (0-4), 7 p.m. – Carrick will once again look for its first win. The Raiders fell to Perry last week.
Penn Hills (3-1) at North Hills (3-1), 7:30 p.m. – North Hills will have its hands full trying to slow down Penn Hills quarterback Billy Kisner (604 yards rushing). However, North Hills has given up only six points the past two games.
Perry (2-2) at Bishop Hartley, Ohio (3-1), 7:30 p.m. – Perry scored twice on interception returns in a 23-6 win against Carrick last week. Kevin Griffin leads the Commodores with five touchdowns.
Pine-Richland (2-2) at Kiski Area (2-2), 7:30 p.m. – Pine-Richland was edged by North Allegheny, 29-28, last week. Kiski Area has lost two straight after a 2-0 start.
Sto-Rox (4-0) at Northgate (1-3), 7 p.m. – Sto-Rox's Lenny Williams is closing in on the WPIAL career passing yardage and touchdown records. Northgate has lost three games in a row.
Vincentian (1-3) at Bentworth (0-4), 7 p.m. – Vincentian lost to Carmichaels, 51-13, last week. Bentworth has been outscored, 213-6.
Westinghouse (1-3) at Carlynton (2-2), 7 p.m. – Losers of three straight, Westinghouse takes on a Carlynton team that is on a two-game winning streak. Carlynton shut out Serra, 42-0, a week ago.

Saturday

WPIAL Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference
Fox Chapel (0-4, 0-4) at Shaler (0-4, 0-4), 1:30 p.m. – Each of these teams have scored 43 points this season. Additionally, both have broken double figures only once.

WPIAL Class AA Allegheny Conference
Ford City (2-2, 1-2) at Summit Academy (1-3, 1-2), 12:30 p.m. – Tyler Blaniar's 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter gave Ford City a three-point win against Southmoreland last week. Summit Academy has lost three in a row.
Freeport (1-3, 1-3) at Shady Side Academy (4-0, 4-0), 2:30 p.m. – Shady Side Academy leads the Class AA Allegheny Conference in scoring offense and defense. Freeport is next-to-last in both categories in the Allegheny Conference.

WPIAL Class AA Century Conference
South Allegheny (0-4, 0-3) at Burgettstown (0-4, 0-3), 1:30 p.m. – South Allegheny has been much more competitive than Burgettstown. The Blue Devils lost to South Fayette, 74-7, last week.

Non-Conference
Allderdice (2-2) at Linsly School, W.Va. (2-2), 3:30 p.m. – Allderdice has won two straight. James Jackson has thrown for 737 yards and six touchdowns. Tim Jackson is averaging 41 yards per catch.
Kiski School (1-2) at Mercersburg Academy (2-0), 2 p.m. – Kiski School is playing its first game against a team from Pennsylvania. The Cougars played their first three games against a pair of Maryland teams and a team from Ohio.
