The measure of a team is how well it competes when the stakes are raised.
Hampton High's boys lacrosse team will learn that lesson all season as the Talbots are in the middle of their first season in Division I of the WPIAL. Winners three of the past four WPIAL Division II titles, the Talbots are in Division I, Section 2. The 3-1 Talbots lost an 8-5 decision to section rival Shady Side Academy, the No. 2 ranked team according to Laxpower.com's regional rankings.
On Monday, the Talbots step out of section for a game with Peters Township, the area's No. 3 team. The Indians are busy over the weekend. They traveled to Westerville, Ohio, for games with Westerville South and Wellington School on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Peters Township has had close decisions in all three of it games with victories over No. 10 Pine-Richland (9-5), No. 6 Upper St. Clair (9-6) and Sewickley Academy (7-6).
Bethel Park hopes it can shake off three hard-luck losses when the Blackhawks visit No. 3 Peters Township (3-0) on Wednesday and No. 10 Pine-Richland 1-1 on Friday.
Bethel Park lost to Butler Area, 8-5, in its opener and followed that up with two one-goal losses to Hampton, 11-10, and Mt. Lebanon, 10-9. Bethel Park was busy this past weekend with games at Lancaster Mennonite and Conestoga Valley.
Elsewhere, No. 2 Shady Side visits No. 10 Pine-Richland on Wednesday.
The region's top-ranked team, Canon-McMillan, takes a 4-0 record into a home game on Monday against Norwin. The first time the Big Macs meet a ranked opponent will be on April 17 when they play No. 8 Seton-LaSalle.
