Wrestling: Playoff picture for WPIAL Team Tournament

Written by Ken Wunderley on .

Today marks final day of section play for WPIAL wrestling teams. Thirty-nine matches are scheduled with most having playoff implications.

On Wednesday, Jan. 23, a one-day section championship tournament will be held in each section. The top three finishers in each sub-section qualify for the section tournament, with five of the six participants advancing to the WPIAL Team Championship Tournament.

At the section tournament, the first place finisher from each sub-section will wrestle the second place team from the other sub-section. The two winners face-off to determine the section champion, while the two losers wrestle for third place. A match between the two third-place teams will determine the fifth participant.

In the event of a two-way tie for first or second place, head to head competition will prevail. A tie of three or more teams will be broken by comparing the head-to-head competition between the tied teams that may result in one or more of the teams demonstrating a higher cumulative total of victories. If the three or more tied teams have identical records against each other, the NFHS tie breaking system (Rule 9-2-2) will be used to break the tie. The same procedure will be used to break a tie for the third place finisher from each sub-section.

Below is the playoff picture in each sub-section.
