Butler, Woodland Hills stake claim as top WPIAL rifle teams

Butler and Woodland Hills, two WPIAL favorites entering the season, both started 2013 with statement wins against tough competition. On January 3 Butler outshot Hempfield 798.63-797.7 while Woodland Hills edged Trinity by the slightest of margins, 798.60-798.56.

The win puts Butler (6-0, 3-0) in control of Section 3 ahead of Hempfield (3-1, 2-1), Plum (2-3, 1-2) and Indiana (1-5, 0-3). Butler was aided in the big win with six shooters shooting a 100, Courtney Barnhart, Connor Harvey, Morgan Minto, Zane Barnett, Sarah Laughlin and Matt Weiland. Plum was another big winner last week scoring a 797.55-786.45 win over Indiana.

The win by the Wolverines put it in first place in Section 2 with a 6-1 overall record and 4-1 section record ahead of Trinity (5-1, 4-1), Mt. Lebanon (5-2, 3-2), Bethel Park (3-3, 1-3) and Upper St. Clair (0-6, 0-5). Mt. Lebanon earned the honors of highest score of the week after it shot a 799.63 in a match against Upper St. Clair who posted the lowest point total of the week with a 785.32.

McGuffey has cemented itself as the team to beat in Section 1 as it improved its perfect section record with a 797.64-785.32 win over Waynesburg Central on Thursday. McGuffey is now 5-2 overall and 5-0 in section ahead of Avella (3-3, 3-1), Washington (2-4, 2-2), Waynesburg Central (1-5, 1-4) and West Greene (0-6, 0-4). Avella was on bye last week while Washington and West Greene had their scheduled January 3 match postponed until January 30.
